         Berbicara tentang gitaris shredder paling keren, mungkin Richie Kotzen salah satunya. Seperti halnya Jason Becker, Richie Kotzen juga merupakan gitaris muda yang sangat berbakat. Pada usia 17 tahun kemampuan Richie dalam permainan gitarnya telah di atas rata-rata. Hal ini dapat Anda saksikan di album solo perdananya "Richie Kotzen" (self-titled diproduseri oleh guru gitarnya: Jason Becker, juga diluncurkan oleh Mike Varney dari Shrapnel Records) dan video lesson Richie Kotzen "Rock Chops" (dari REH Video). Anda dapat menyaksikan betapa menakjubkan kecepatan Richie dalam memainkan teknik legato atau tapping. Pada usia 20 tahun Richie kemudian dikenal kalangan umum ketika ia pertama kali bergabung dengan band terkenal: Poison (menggantikan posisi gitaris CC.Deville). 

Pengaruh Richie yang sedemikian besarnya bahkan sanggup mengganti warna musik band Poison di album "Native Tongue" (1993). Album ini berhasil mencapai platinum dengan 2 single yang berhasil masuk ke TOP 20 Single: "Stand" dan "Until You Suffer Some (Fire and Ice)". Kedua lagu single ini ditulis oleh Richie juga. Kini Richie lebih terkenal lagi setelah dia bergabung dengan band Mr.BIG, menggantikan posisi Paul Gilbert.

 

 

         Richie besar di Los Angeles dan pertama kali memainkan piano pada usia 5 tahun. Selanjutnya Richie pertama kali mempelajari gitarnya pada usia 7 tahun, diinspirasikan oleh sebuah poster KISS. Pada usia 17 tahun Richie sudah meluncurkan album solo NeoClassic pertamanya dan ditampilkan di sampul " column majalah Guitar World. Pada album solo kedua (Fever Dream - 1990), ketiga (Electric Joy - 1991) dan keempatnya Richie mengganti warna musiknya ke Modern Blues dan mengisi vocal sendiri di semua album tsb. Di luar dugaan kualitas vocal blues Richie sangatlah bagus untuk seorang gitaris shredder. Pada tahun 1992 Richie tampil di rekaman "Guitars That Rule The World Vol.I" dengan lagu "Chype Fluxx" bersama giatris ngetop lainnya seperti Paul Gilbert, Yngwie, Nuno, Reb Beach, dll. 1 tahun kemudian (1993) Richie yang telah bergabung dengan band Poison akhirnya harus keluar dari band tersebut karena Richie menikahi pacar drummer Poison (Rikki Rocket). Setelah itu Richie meluncurkan banyak sekali solo album dari Jazz Fusion, Punk, Soul " Blues. Nama-nama solo album Richie adalah sbb: Inner Galactic Fusion Experience (1995), Bi-Polar Blues (1999), Break It All Down (2000), Something To Say (2000), Wave Of Emotion (2000) dan What Is... (2000). Richie juga ikut mengisi di rekaman blues "L.A. Blues Authority Vol.5 - Cream Of The Crop" (1994) dan mengisi di album Jazz Fusion dengan band Vertu. Pada tahun 1999 ketika gitaris terkenal Paul Gilbert memutuskan untuk meninggalkan band Mr.Big. Richie terpilih untuk mengganti posisi Paul di album terbaru Mr.BIG "Get Over It" yang terjual lebih dari 175.000 copy pada 2 minggu pertama di Jepang dan disusuli oleh tour Asianya yang cukup sukses.
